How it began

Both my parents and my in-laws are small business owners. So I have always been interested in the how-to’s of running a business.

During Uni I worked in our family’s engineering business developing their quality assurance system and later rejoined the business to assist with quality assurance and compliance with certifying bodies.

Throughout my paediatric OT career, I always knew I wanted to have my own practice with lots of therapists to support our local community. I was lucky enough to be able to work in a variety of private practices when I began my career so I was able to see how others were providing the same service. This was a key learning experience for me.

In 2017 I opened my own practice, Sensational Start OT. Finally I was able to put all of my knowledge and experience to good use! We have grown from 1 to 9 therapists and three clinics in past 7 years. These days I oversee Sensational Start OT and have a wonderful Practice Manager and Management team to ensure we are providing and exceptional service to our clients and team members.

But even with all of my experience combined, nothing prepared me for the challenges I was going to face as a small business owner. From client management system errors, Medicare errors, difficulties recruiting, and managing a business with small children and a travelling husband, I have made most of the mistakes and lived the same challenges you are going to face!

I wish that from the start of my journey, I had someone in my corner to support me through the journey of establishing a business. Someone that was affordable, relatable and able to give me the answers and guidance that was relevant to me.

As a very systematic person, I’m able to support you to analyse your business, your role as a leader and help you to build a service and team that you are proud of. I am big on making connections and sharing my knowledge and resources to allow you to implement change within your service. I do this by mentoring allied health business owners to establish services that are aligned with their clinical values and to support them to be able to reach their business goals.

Clinical supervision and professional trainings

Years ago, I was lamenting to a colleague that I wished there was someone out there that would just teach the new grad therapists coming through the “nuts and bolts’ of being an OT.

The work we do as an OT is highly complex and varied. I have always been a paediatric OT, and have been lucky enough to be able to attend hundreds of hours of CPD, supervision, mentoring and reading to help me to become the therapist I am today. However, those coming out new to the profession are sometimes going into roles without clinical support, planning time, resources or training opportunities.

I believe that every client should receive care from a well trained therapy team and I am making it my mission to inspire, educate and support Occupational Therapists across Australia. I have developed a variety of support services including resources, workshops, training packages, clinical supervision and mentoring are the educational opportunities which will help an OT learn and grow within a safe and supportive environment.
